L.A. Music Week is an instrument of unity, building bridges to the diverse citizenry while enhancing local tourism.  All contents are Los Angeles Music Week' exclusive intellectual property.  Permission must be obtained for use of these contents.

                                      Sarah Fisk Biography

I GREW UP IN A FAMILY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC LOVERS.  SATURDAY AT THE MET  WAS A MUST IN OUR HOUSEHOLD.  I WAS THE YOUNGEST OF 6 GIRLS, ALL OF WHOM ASPIRED CREATIVELY IN THEIR OWN WAY.  IN HIGH SCHOOL THE MUSIC TEACHER PUT A CELLO IN MY HAND AND SAID, LEARN TO PLAY THIS.  WELL, I WAS NOT A PRODIGY.  BUT I LOVED IT.  PUT IT AWAY FOR 40 YEARS....DREAMING OF THE DAY I COULD LEARN TO PLAY WELL.

IN THE MEAN TIME, I BECAME A REGISTERED NURSE, MARRIED, HAD FOUR CHILDREN, WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TO GET MY DEGREE IN NURSING, BURNED OUT OF NURSING AND WENT TO LAW SCHOOL TO AID ME IN MY PROPERTY MANAGEMENT CAREER.

WHEN I WAS WIDOWED IN 1979, I TOOK UP MY CELLO AND BEGAN TAKING LESSONS, HOPING TO BECOME A GOOD PLAYER...WELL, IT NEVER HAPPENED.  BUT I WAS WELCOMED INTO THE
New Valley Symphony Orchestra (NVSO) AS AN AMATEUR AND OHHH, HOW SWEET IT WAS TO BE PART OF THIS GREAT MUSIC, (EVEN IF I PLAYED OFF THE STRINGS SOMETIMES...OR THE FIRST NOTE OF EACH MEASURE.)

THEN THE NEED FOR AN ORGANIZER WAS EVIDENT IN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND I STEPPED IN .   FOR 15 YEARS I HAVE BEEN WITH THE ORGANIZATION AND SERVED AS PRESIDENT FOR MOST OF THAT TIME.

BECAUSE WE WERE CONTINUOUSLY SHORT OF MONEY.
I REDIRECTED THE ORG.  AND RESTATED OUR MISSION TO MAKE ALL CONCERTS FREE.

I BEGAN A SERIES OF MUSICAL SOIREES IN THE HOMES WHICH WERE FUNDRAISERS AND WE PERFORMED AT FOREST LAWN, HOLLYWOOD HILLS WHICH IS A BEAUTIFUL HALL (HALL OF LIBERTY)  AT NO COST.  IT BEING FREE, AND THE LITTLE MONEY WE GOT FROM THE MUSICALES GAVE US A START.  WE GREW, BEGAN WRITING GRANTS, ADVERTISING IN THE PROGRAMS, ETC. AND NOW, WE ARE A NON PROFIT COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA WHICH I THINK IS THE BEST IN THE SOUTHERN CALIF AREA.   WE BROUGHT IN A NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR, ARMEN GARABEDIAN, WHO IS NOT JUST A GREAT MUSICIAN, BUTWELL KNOWN AND RESPECTED  WITHIN HIS MUSICAL AND ARMENIAN COMMUNITY.

ONE OF MY DREAMS IS TO BRING GREAT CLASSICAL MUSIC TO THE SCHOOL CHILDREN OF LOS ANGELES.  THAT TOO BECAME A REALITY.  TO DATE, WE HAVE TAKEN OUR CONCERTS TO THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUMS 6 TIMES, WITH PACKED AUDIENCES.  THE STUDENTS ARE WONDERFUL, ALERT, APPRECIATIVE AND ATTENTIVE.  WHEN ASKED HOW MANY HAVE EVER SEEN A LIVE CONCERT OF A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, ONLY 2 OR 3 HANDS WOULD GO UP.  NOW, THAT IS OF GREAT SATISFACTION....I REMEMBER HOW IMPORTANT IT WAS TO ME AS WE HUDDLED AROUND THE OLD PHILCO TO LISTEN TO THE SATURDAY AT THE MET.
